Shoals of Herring

Oh, it was a fine and a pleasant day
Out of Yarmouth harbour I was faring
As a cabin boy on a sayling logger
For to go and hunt the shoals of herring.

Oh, the work was hard and the hours were long
And the treatment, sure, it took some bearing
There was little kindness and the kicks were many
As we hunted the shoals of herring.

Oh, we fished the Swarth and the Broken Bank
I was cook and I'd the quarter sharing
And I used to sleep standing on my feet
And I dreamed about the shoals of herring.

Oh, we left the home grounds in the month of june
And the canny sheels we soon were bearing
With a hundred cran of the silver darlings
That we'd taken from the shoals of herring.

Now you're up on deck, you're a fisherman
You can swear and show a manly bearing
Take your turn on watch with the other fellows
While you're searching for the shoals of herring.

In the stormy seas and the living gales
Just to earn your daily bread you're daring
From the Dover Straits to the Faroe Islands
As you're following the shoals of herring.

Oh, I earned my keep and I paid my way
And I earned the gear that I was wearing
Sailed a million miles, caught ten million fishes
We were sailing after shoals of herring.

With our nets and gear we're faring
On the wild and wasteful ocean
It's there on the deep
That we harvest and reap our bread

As we hunt the bonny shoals of herring
Oh, it was a fine and a pleasant day
Out of Yarmouth harbour I was faring
As a cabin boy on a sailing lugger

For to go and hunt the shoals of herring
Now the work was hard and the hours were long
And the treatment surely took some bearing
There was little kindness and the kicks were many

As we hunted for the shoals of herring
Oh, we fished the Sward and the Broken Bank
I was cook and I'd a quarter sharing
And I used to sleep standing on my feet

And I'd dream about the shoals of herring
We left the home grounds in the month of June
And to canny Shields we soon was bearing
With a hundred cran of the silver darlings

That we'd taken from the shoals of herring
Now you're up on deck, you're a fisherman
You can swear and show a manly bearing
Take your turn on watch with the other fellows

While you're following the shoals of herring
In the stormy seas and the living gale
Just to earn your daily bread you're daring
From the Dover Straits to the Faroe Islands

While you're following the shoals of herring
I earned my keep and I paid my way
And I earned the gear that I was wearing
Sailed a million miles, caught ten million fishes
We were following the shoals of herring

Night and day we're faring
Come winter wind or winter gale
Sweating or cold,
Growing up, growing old and dying
As you hunt the bonnie shoals of herring

 The Herring!

The herring is the king of the sea
The herring is the fish for me
The herring is the king of the sea
Sing fol the do or die

Oh what'll we do with the herring's eyes?
We'll make them all into puddings and pies
We'll make them all into puddings and pies
 And all sorts of things!
 Herring's eyes, puddings and pies
 And all sorts of things!

The herring is the king of the sea …

Oh what'll we do with the herring's heads?
We'll make them all into loaves of bread
We'll make them all into loaves of bread
 And all sorts of things!
 Herring's heads, loaves of bread
 Herring's eyes, puddings and pies
 And all sorts of things!

Oh what'll we do with the herring's bellies
We'll make them all into lassies and nellies…

Oh what'll we do with the herring's backs?
We'll make them all into laddies and jacks…

Oh what'll we do with the herring's fins?
We'll make them all into needles and pins…

Oh what'll we do with the herring's tail?
We'll make it a ship with a beautiful sail
We'll make it a ship with a beautiful sail
 And all sorts of things!
 Herring's tails, ships with sails
 Herring's fins, needles and pins
 Herring's backs, laddies and jacks
 Herring's bellies, lassies and nellies
 Herring's heads, loaves of bread
 Herring's eyes, puddings and pies
 And all sorts of things!

Vraag.

i

Song Of The Fishgutters

by Ewan MacColl

Come a’ ye fisher lassies, aye, it's come awa wi me
Fae Cairnbulg and Gamrie and fae Inverallochie
Fae Buckie and fae Aiberdeen and a’ the country roon
We're awa tae gut the herrin, we're awa tae Yarmouth toon.

Rise up in the morning wi your bundles in your hand,
Be at the station early or you'll surely hae to stand,
Tak plenty to eat and a kettle for your tea,
Or you'll mebbe die of hunger on the way to Yarmouth quay.

The journey it's a lang ane and it taks a day or twa,
And when you reach your lodgins sure it's soond asleep you fa,
But ye rise at five wi the sleep still in your ee,
You're awa tae find the gutting yards along the Yarmouth quay.

It's early in the morning and it's late into the nicht,
Your hands a’ cut and chappit and they look an unco sicht,
And you greet like a wean when you put them in the bree,
And you wish you were a thoosand mile awa frae Yarmouth quay
.
There's coopers there and curers there and buyers,
canny chiels, And lassies at the pickling and others at the creels,
And you'll wish the fish had been a' left in the sea
By the time you finish guttin herrin on the Yarmouth quay.

We've gutted fish in Lerwick and in Stornoway and Shields,
Warked along the Humber 'mongst the barrels and the creels;
Whitby, Grimsby, we've traivelled up and doon,
But the place to see the herrin is the quay at Yarmouth toon.

Words:
Bree: salt water
Canny: careful, crafty
Chappit: with cracked skin that has been exposed to cold, especially when wet.
Chiels: chaps, boys
Coopers: men who make or repair barrels
Creels: woven baskets for fish
Curers: men who preserve the fish, e.g. by using salt or smoke
Fae: from
Greet: weep, cry
Unco sicht : terrible sight
Wean: child

Scottish industry.'

I can see the boats at Mallaig from Lewis and the Clyde
Low down in the water to the harbour with the tide
I can see 'The Horse' and Sammy from the
'Stormdrift' at the dawn
With a hundred cran of herring
But the fishing days are gone

chorus:

They ploughed the sea and they reaped the silver corn
There were hard days and bitter ways to greet the frosty dawn
They ploughed the sea and they reaped the silver corn
They made hard lives and bitter wives
But the fishing days are gone

As a boy I used to watch them as they fished the Arran shore
On calm and peaceful summer nights then next day
home once more
And when winter winds were howling and the
world lay still and warm
They were out there on the water but the fishing days are gone

Now the big ships sweep the ocean from Shetland down to Spain
The drifter and the ring net we will never see again
The smoking sheds lie empty and the 'Stormdrift’s'
days are done
The herring ships are over
And the fishing days are gone
